Abstract

625,587. Road making machines. BARBER-GREENE CO. Jan. 2, 1947, No. 134. Convention date, Feb. 4, 1946. [Class 107] Levelling apparatus for use in a road making machine comprises a screed 12 supported from pivoted arms 10 mounted on the chassis of the machine, the front edge 18 of the screed being levelled so that it is tangental to the lower periphery of a rotating roller 19. The roller consolidates the loose road material 30 by forcing it down beneath the screed so that a firm level layer 31 of material is left behind the screed, any loose material being prevented from getting behind the roller by a shield 29. The material is fed on to a platform on the machine, the bottom of the platform being formed by one or more endless conveyers so that the material is discharged to a screw spreader 8 which distributes the material in front of the roller ready for consolidation and levelling. The peripheral speed of the roller is greater than the forward speed of the machine.
