718,511. Laying road &c. surfaces. MILLER, 1. G., and MASON, D. S. Aug. 11, 1952 [July 4, 1951], No. 15813/51. Class 107 A machine for coating road and like surfaces with filled bitumen or similar material or for applying a surface layer of tar &c. includes a heated trough or weir arranged to receive the heated material from a bulk container and which is arranged to be self-propelled or to be attached to or towed by any suitable supply vehicle (the bulk container), the machine being so arranged that the material to be laid flows through or over the trough or weir under control of one or more adjustable control devices so as to form in the machine a film or-layer of substantially uniform thickness, which film is then transferred to the road or like surface as the machine traverses it. The trough 1 is formed by plates 5, 6 and end plates 7. The trough is pivoted in bearings 2 on the machine frame. The position of plate 6 is adjustable by bolts 9 to leave an adjustable slot 8. Gas or other burners 10 heat both plates. Plates 11, 11a control the width of carpet laid down and are adjustable on a screwed rod 12. The machine may be mounted on wheels 15 or skids (not shown).
