' Claims. .(CI. 94-44 nection with the paving of driveways and similar situa-' tions, where it is frequently advantageous to be able :to change the width of the .paving material dispensed as the operation progresses. Further the device of invention provides for the formation-oftapered driveways a's lateral adjustment may take place continuously, or as required, to vary the "width of the'jpaving material fspre'ad.
-A iparticul'ar object of :the invention .is to provide in conjunction with a telescoping'hopper arrangement a telescoping screed which provides for the spreading of mate-- rial dispensed from the hopper in the same width as that dispensed by the hopper.
Yet another object of the inventionis the .provision of a dispenser device for paving materials which device'is adjustable laterallyfrom each end thereof and which is supported from the adjustableends in such manner that a central support is not necessary.
In the device of invention forward and rearward sta tionary wall members of the structure disposed intermediate the width of the apparatus receive in telescoped relation and are supported by end closure units which, with thestationary wall -members,-cornplete the hopper. Support of the stationary wall members is provided along the forward and rearward walls by the end closure units which are themselves supported above ground level by any suitablemeans which are adapted for towing of the device, for-example. The suppont means of the'stationar-"y wall members are :suitably' formed to house drive elements for occasioning movement of the telescoping end closure units relative to the stationary wall members.
.Aiscreed extends along the rearward wall of the spreader .and has telescoping portions which are pivotally'connected to the closure units and movable therewith as well as in a vertical plane. Independent screed adjustments provide for controlled screed movement of tapered pavmgs.
These andother-objects of the invention will be more fully understood by reference to the following detailed description and accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure lis a perspective view-of the device of invention taken from a forward side thereof;
Figure 2 is'a rear view of the device of invention with supporting members removed and showing the devicein a position of minimum width, portions being broken away for completeness of illustration;
Figure '3 is a view similart'o' that of Figure 2 but illustraiting the device in a position of extended width, portions being brokenaway for completeness of illustrationt Figure "4 is a sectional view line 44 of Figure 1; V Figure 5 is asectional view taken 5-5 'of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a'fragmentary view, somewhat enlarged, illustrating a screed supporting arrangement; and 1 taken approximately .on
substantially on line Figure 7 is a sectional view taken on line-7 7 of Figure 2.
jln'theidevice of the drawings the opposed lateral hop-' per closure telescoping ends and the arrangements thereof are similar and accordingly for convenience reference in detail will .be made to only one end.
In Figure 1 the numeral 1 designates :a forward stationary wall member which extends laterally of the device over a major portion of the, length thereof andwhich tapers downwardly inwardly of the hopper .rearwardly. The numeral 3 designates the rear stationary wall member of the hopper which extends laterally inparallel relation with the wall member 1 and is of the samelength as the stationary wall member 1. Stationary wall members 1 and3 are spaced apart and define an openhopper bottom Sgthrough which .paving materials are distributable to a" roadbed. Stationary wallmember 1 is flanged at 7 (Figure 4) over the length thereof andstationary wall member 3 is similarly flanged at 9;
The numeral l-lwgenerally indicates a hopper end closure whichisprovided with an end panel 13 .to which are,
welded side panels '15, -17. Sidepanels 15,..17 are flanged respectively at I9, 21. The end closure unit 11 :(Figure 1;) istelescoped over .one end of the stationary wallmemhers 1,3, connects these members together, and with the members forms one .end of the dispenser device. The
provision of the second .and similar end closure unit 11. at the further end of the devicecompletesthefhopper.
'Thepanels 15, 1-7 of the closure unit 11 liealong the inner side of the stationary Wall members 1, 3, respectively, vwhile the flanges '19, 21, respectively, engageover the flanges 7, *9 of the stationary wall members 1,3.
As shown 'inFigure 1. along the forwardstationary wall .member there is provided a channel '23 which extends ov'er substantially the full length of the stationary wall member in parallel relation with asimilar lower channel .25. f Each of the channels is suitably welded or otherwise s'e'cured'to-thelforward stationar y'wall .memher. A similar pair of channels 27, 29 are provided on .theirearw'ard stationary wall member 3 The panel 15 of the 'en'd'closure member '11 is pro-T vided at its extremity at 31 with a metal pad welded thereto. Secured on this pad suitably by welding is a somewhat smaller'channel member 33 which telescopes withinthe channel'member23. Similarly, channel member '35, also secured on the pad 31, telescopes within the channel memberf25. Onathe rearward side of the device a similar pad 37 has welded thereto an extremity of a channel 39 which telescopes within the channel 27.
The pad 37 also supports at its lower end another channel 41 "which telescopes within the channel 29'.
The pads 31, 37. project from the outer surface of the panels and abut the ends of the stationary wall mem: bers in the closed position of the dispenser device shown in Figure 2. e I
The channels 33, 35, '39, 41 are somewhat longer than half of the lengthof'the channels on the stationary wallmembers and accordingly extend substantially to the center of the width of the device in the closed position tthereof.
As already noted and as shown in the drawings similar channels are provided on the second end of the device and will extend closely into adjacent relation with the channels 33, 35', 39, 41 in the closed position.
Extending into e'ach of the channels carried by the telescoping end closure units is a threaded screw, such being designated at 42, 43, 44, 45, respectively. These screws cooperate with appropriately positioned nuts 46, 47, 48, 49 secured on the stationary wall members 1 and 3, respectively, within the channels. Suitably the channels are packed with grease both to facilitate screw operation and relative sliding of the channels.
A chain 60 passes over the sprockets (Figure 1); projection 52 has secured thereto a handle 61 for driving of the chain and accordingly for turning of the screw threaded shafts simultaneously in rotation.
A similar structural arrangement is provided at each end of the device and accordingly each end closing unit is separably adjustable laterally to provide for the dispensing of variable widths of paving material.
An angle reinforcement 63 is welded to the panel 13 and the flanges 19, 21 and to the vertical standard 65. The standard 65 is itself secured by welding to a skid 67. A pair of such skids provide support for the end closure units and consequently for the stationary wall members which are supported by the end closure members above ground level. The skids also furnish means which are adapted for towing of the dispenser. The skid 67 is also welded at 68 to the bottom extension of panel 13. Other common movable support means may be used in place of the skids.
The numeral 69 indicates a connecting bar which is pivotally secured at one end to a stub shaft 71 welded to the hopper end closure. The other end of connecting bar 69 is pivotally secured to a rod 73 which is itself secured on a screed generally designated at 75 and shaped as shown in Figure 6.
A pair of washers 76, 77 on either side of the connecting bar 69 and welded to the rod 73 retain the bar 69 in position endwise of the device. The screed 75 (Figure 2) has a stationary portion 79 and is hollow to provide for the receipt therein of a telescoping portion 81.- This telescoping portio'n 81 is also hollow as is indicated in Figure 6, but the end is normally closed by a suitable plate welded thereto as shown in Figure l. The telescoping portion 81 is the portion of the screed to which the rod 73 is secured. Accordingly, upon movement of the end closure 11 the bar 69, rod 73 and the screed telescoping portion 81 will move as a unit laterally. As already noted a similar structural arrangement is prepared for the opposite end of the device; thus the screed is supported for pivotal movement from the ends of the closure units.
The screed 75 is spaced slightly from the rear wall 3 and a guide 83 on the channels 27, 29 extends vertically and tends to assist in the maintaining of the spacing. The screed 75 is vertically adjustable through the medium of a threaded screw rod 85. Threaded rod 85 carries oh its upper end handle 87 and its lower end projects into a fixed nut 89 mounted within a shell casing 91 on the fixed portion of the screed.
Upwardly the shaft 85 is supported from the fixed portion of the stationary wall member 3 by a suitable bracket 93. .Similar screw shafts 85 are providedat each end of the device for movement of the screed. However, one end of the screed may suitably be at a slightly higher level than the other due to the inherent resiliency of the structure, thus providing for a tapered efiectin the height of the dispensed material.
Referring again to Figure l, the numeral 95 generally designates a hitch having rubber tired wheels 96 and which hitch is adapted to connect the dispenser spreader to the rear axle of a truck, for example. Any suitable type of connecting means between the spreader and towing vehicle may be employed however. For the purpose of elevating the hitch 95 there is provided on the re r Of '4 the spreader 97 a hand pump 98 having a handle 99. This pump is connected through a hose connection 101 with an operative pressure cylinder mechanism 103 of the hitch such provides for raising and lowering the hitch to permit the hitch to engage the rear axle of a truck, for example.
As shown in Figure l the hose 101 is protected in its passage from the rear to the front of the spreader by suitable piping 105 through which the hose passes.
Summarizing the operation briefly, rotation of the.
handle 61 causes threaded screws 42, 43, 44, 45 to rotate in unison through their respective nuts 46, 47, 48, 49, and to cause the end closure unit .11 to move inwardly and outwardly of the stationary members, depending upon direction of rotation of the handle 61. Simultaneously the telescoping portion 81 of the screed is moved with the end closure 11. Adjustment of the vertical screed height to provide a uniform surface or a slightly tapered surface may be made either before or during movement of the end portion.
It is to be particularly noted that the stationary wall members of the device of invention are supported from the movable end closure units by structural elements extending along the lateral walls of the spreader device. Such arrangement is economical of dispensing space and adapts the device for utilization in situations where the paving material must be spread close to abutments such as walls and the like.
.While in the specific description the actuating means It will be understood that this invention is susceptible to modification in order to adapt it to different usages and conditions and accordingly, it is desired to comprehend such modifications within this invention as may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
