Abstract

A phenolic compound, having a nuclear substituent which is an unsaturated hydrocarbon radical of 12-30 carbon atoms, and derived from the Anacardiace family of plants, is polymerized by treatment with substantially anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. Suitable phenolic compounds are cashew nut shell oil, marking nut shell liquid, Japanese lac, constituents of these materials such as urushiol anacardic acid, cardol, cardanol, or anacardol, or ethers, esters or hydrogenated derivatives of these substances. Some of these starting materials are described in U.S.A. Specification 2,181,119. Polymerization is effected by passing hydrogen fluoride through the liquid at - 10-300 DEG C., preferably in a closed container with recirculation. The products vary from liquids slightly more viscous than the starting materials to solid, rubber-like materials.
