Abstract

625,376. Universal joints. LE CLAIR, L. J. July 24, 1947, No. 19978. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXI] In a vehicle having a pair of wheels on a common axle, resiliently mounted to tilt laterally relatively to the frame, which latter has a driving member constrained to rotate about a substantially fixed transverse axis, a hollow power transmitting member driven from the driving member and universally coupled to a wheel, surrounds the axle and is journalled in a gear case for rotation about a second transverse axis, the gear case being restrained to rock about an axis on or parallel and close to, the driving member axis. The shaft 24 of a driving motor 17 mounted by rubber bushes at 18, 19, 20 to the vehicle frame carries a gear 25 meshing with a gear 26 rigid with a hollow shaft 27 journalled in bearings 34, 35 in a gear case 28. The gear case is journalled on the bearings 32, 33 on the shaft 24, and is restrained to movement in a vertical plane by horns 39 bearing on rubbing pads 40 on the casing. The shaft 27 surrounds the axle 12 and has a flange 36 connected to a wheel 10 by axial pins 37 co-operating with rubber bushes 38 in the wheel. One half of the gear case is divided along a horizontal plane and the other half in a vertical plane for strength. In a modification the gear case is journalled on the motor casing and is restrained to movement in the vertical plane by a swinging link, the driven gear being journalled on an inwardly projecting flange of the gear case. In another modification the axle is constrained to move in an arc by a radius rod and the gear case is pivoted about the same axis which is parallel and adjacent the motor axis.
