Abstract

625,044. Boxes. SMITH, W. H. July 31, 1946, Nos. 22798/46, 35080/46 and 9420/47. [Class 18] A folding cardboard or like box has a partition 16, which prevents the walls from bulging, secured to two opposite walls by pliable metal tabs 11. The walls 1 fold about creases 3 when the box is collapsed. In one construction vertical "T" members 4, stitched to the walls 1 have one or two tabs 11 secured by a rivet 10. The top 7 of the partition 16 is folded over and a slot 8 extends along the fold line leaving solid parts 9 at each end. Two lids 13 hinged to end walls 2 have flaps 14 which fit inside the body and tuck into the slot 8. Alternatively, a separate lid with side flaps fitting outside the body of the box may be secured. by tabs 35 passing through slots 34. In a modification, tabs secured to the side walls and passing through a slot in the lid may be bent down over the side walls of both the lid and of the body. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the tabs 33 are folded up to pass through a slot in the wall 1 and are then opened out to reinforce and secure the walls. The top edges 40 of the walls 1, 2 may be folded inwardly and downwardly. The walls 1 may have extensions 28 which overlap and strengthen the walls 2. The pliable tabs may consist of card or paper reinforced with metal strip or wire. Wire alone may be used, in which case the wire passes through holes in the lid or wall. Reinforcing battens 17 may be fitted to the bottom to co-operate with rigid posts 15 in stacking. The lid may have hinged cutouts to facilitate filling the box. The box may be treated inside and outside with a waterproofing substance. Specification 593,373 is referred to.
