Abstract
624,886. Valve amplifying circuits. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Nov. 8, 1946, No. 33290. Convention date, May 6, 1943. [Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vi)] In an expander circuit using a valve having at least two control grids and two screen grids, the signal and a voltage dependent of the signal amplitude each being applied to a different control grid, a circuit common to the screen grids includes a resistance of such size that the mutual conductance of the valve increases with an increase in the negative control voltage. As shown, the signal is applied to the first control grid of a heptode valve 5. Part of the output is rectified by a diode 15 to give a negative control voltage which is applied to the second control grid of valve 5 through a filter 19. The screen grids are connected to the H.T. supply through a common resistance 17 of such size that the mutual conductance of the valve increases with an increase in the negative control voltage. The control voltage and the signal input may both be applied to the second control grid, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the signal input and the control voltage are applied to the first and second control grids respectively, and an amplified signal is taken from the first screen grid and applied to the second control grid via the second screen grid and a voltage divider. The invention enables the cathode of the control rectifier to be at the same potential as the cathode of the amplifier. Negative feedback may be used to reduce distortion.
