Abstract

624,765. Drafting textile fibres. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 26, 1944, No. 12081. Convention date, June 26, 1943. [Classes 120 (i), 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] [Also in Groups XIX, XXXV and XXXVII] A textile drafting apparatus includes two pairs of drafting rollers and regulating means for controlling the speed relation between the two pairs of rollers in accordance with the density of a sliver as it passes through a flow tube having openings corresponding to the normal sectional area of the sliver and which is connected to a source of fluid, variations in the fluid pressure controlling the regulating means. Air from a constant pressure source is supplied through a restricted orifice 29 to a pipe 40 communicating with a chamber 28c in a flow tube 28, through which the sliver 10 passes after being drafted between pairs of rollers 12, 13. Air is also supplied through a restricted orifice 34 to a pipe 35, carrying a needle valve 36 with an outflow to atmosphere and connected to the lower chamber of a diaphragm device 27 by a pipe 37 carrying another needle valve 38. The upper chamber of the diaphragm device is associated with the pipe 40 and the two diaphragms are connected by a yoke 27d secured to a rod 26 of a carbon stack 21, which is in electrical connection with motors 14, 16 driving the pairs of rollers 12, 13. Variation in the resistance of the carbon stack 21 effects' alteration in the relative speeds of the motors. Any irregularity in the density of the sliver 10 will affect the air pressure in the chamber 28c, with a corresponding pressure variation in the upper chamber of the diaphragm device 27, resulting in movement of the rod 26 to alter the resistance of the carbon stack 21. To eliminate the tendency for a hunting action to be set up the needle valve 38 is provided. A multichamber flow tube device 42 is connected to the constant pressure air supply to support the fibres and facilitate uniform drafting. A pressure indicating device, such as a Bourdon gauge 41, is connected to the pipe 40, this may be calibrated to indicate directly the density of the sliver. The apparatus may be adapted only to measure the fibre density. In a further modification, the flow tube device 28. is dispensed with and the multichamber flow tube 42 is adapted' to perform the functions of both tubes.
