Abstract

624,630. Electric gas producers. MIGUET, P. L. J., and PERRON, M. P. Sept. 13, 1946, No. 27592. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 13, 1946.] [Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XII] An electro-thermal gas producer comprises an electrode frame 18 suspended in a furnace vat having a conically shaped cap formed from a plurality of metal units 1 resting on the periphery of the vat and extending upwards and towards the electrode frame 18. Each unit 1 has an upper charging aperture 8, a lower opening for a pneumatically operated poker 24, a principal suction opening 11 above the poker and an upper opening 13 for the removal of residual gases and air that enters the upper region of the vat. A tube is provided through the centre of the electrode frame for the injection of any gas or vapour to be subjected to a transformation process. The electrode frame is energized by flexible connections 7 extending from each metal unit 1 to contact studs 20 formed on the sides of the electrode frame. An electrically conductive sole of the furnace may be energized by conductive vat walls or, alternatively, complementary half openings may be provided in the metal units 1 for the passage of sole-feeding conductor bars, the cap being suitably insulated from the vat walls or the solefeeding bars as the case may be. Examples are given of the production of: water gas, carbon monoxide, calcium carbide and ferro silicon from carbon and water; of carbon monoxide and ferro-silicon from silica; of carbon monoxide and calcium carbide from carbon with chalk or lime.
