Abstract

In a multiple-column fractionating apparatus wherein each column is fed at the base with vapour and wherein the reflux liquid flows down from each contact device, e.g. a plate, to the next lower contact device in another column, clogging and backflow of liquid is eliminated by providing conduits of narrow cross-section between the vapour spaces above the connected contact devices. Columns 11 and 12 are each provided with superposed contact devices (cross - hatched rectangles) arranged so that the contact devices of one column are vertically offset with respect to those of the other. The inlets 3 of the contact devices in column 11 are connected to the outlets 41 of the contact devices of column 12 by siphons 7; similarly, inlets 31 are connected to outlets 4 by tubes 6 and siphons 71. Vapour streams A1 and A2 are supplied to the bottoms of columns 11 and 12 respectively. Narrow conduits 8 connect the vapour spaces of the columns and permit a small amount of either vapour stream to pass from one column to the other so that the pressures above those contact devices connected by tubes 6, are balanced. An embodiment having four columns connected in <PICT:0624615/III/1> series is also described. In the case of several columns, the vapour spaces at a given level may be connected to a common tube.
