Abstract
624,206. Machinery guards. RANDALL, J. W., and DICKINSON & CO., Ltd., J. June 12, 1947, No. 15510. [Class 80 (iv)] A guard for the platens 2, 3 of a platen press or the like adapted to move down into guarding position with the movable platen 3, and in descending to sweep outwards, is actuated by means which are automatically adjusted relative to the moving platen by contact therewith when the platen is reset. As shown, the guard comprises a rubber blade 13 carried by side arms 18 pivoted on cranks 19 on a shaft 10, extensions 181 of the arms 18 having pin- and-slot engagements 20, 12 with members 8 movable with the platen 3 and freely carrying the shaft 10. A gear wheel 21 is mounted on the shaft 10 and is engaged by a pinion 22 mounted on one of the brackets 8 and meshing with a rack 23, frictionally mounted on a fixed bar 24 by spring means (not shown). As the platen 3 descends, the guard is swung out about a descending longitudinal axis. If the platen 3 is reset at a different height, a lug 31 thereon engages a stop 30 on the rack 23, and automatically moves it along the fixed bar 24, so that the guard will operate over a new guarding range. In a modification the guard is directly mounted on a crank on the shaft 10.
