Abstract
<PICT:0624125/III/1> <PICT:0624125/III/2> <PICT:0624125/III/3> In a continuous crystallization, the suspension of crystals and mother liquor is passed upwards through a vessel having two or more constrictions disposed successively along the path of the ascending current, and the crystals which have grown to the desired size are removed from the bottom of the vessel. In the vessel shown in Fig. 2, the constrictions are obtained by truncated cones e, and each constriction has associated with it a deflecting cone f. In preferred forms the diameter of the vessel increases, and the constrictions have apertures of progressively increasing size, in the direction of flow of the suspension as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. When crystallization arises from chemical reaction between two solutions, one of the solutions is passed upwards and the other is injected at suitable points in the apparatus, e.g. the centres of the apertures as shown by inlet tubes i in Fig. 3.
