Abstract

<PICT:0712814/III/1> A classifying crystallizer comprises a crystallization vessel 10 of substantially constant cross-section over the major portion of its height, an inlet in, or terminating adjacent the bottom of the vessel and a closed baffle 12 adjacent and symmetrically disposed with respect to the inlet, the baffle being either substantially pear-shaped, or, as shown, substantially biconical. In a modification the baffle has a cylindrical portion of diameter equal to the maximum diameter of the baffle. When a downcomer is used, as shown, the baffle is formed concentrically with the inlet pipe 11. The vertical velocity of the liquid at the point of maximum baffle diameter is at least equal to the settling velocity of the largest crystals which are removed by a siphon or pump. The only crystals below this point are small crystals being recirculated or which have been added with the feed liquid. The baffle diameter at any given point above the point of maximum diameter is arranged to provide a liquid velocity suitable for crystals of a predetermined size, and is determined in accordance with known data for the settling rates of crystals of various sizes together with the known density of suspension required for the proper dissipation of supersaturation. The effect of the baffle having a cylindrical portion is to spread out the zinc containing the largest crystals, such baffles, e.g. of three to ten feet in length, being used with liquors such as ferrous sulphate liquors which desupersaturate slowly. For ammonium nitrate liquors the baffle would have no cylindrical portion. By suitably designing the upper part of the baffle the separation between crystals of two given sizes may have any desired value, increasing as the angle of taper of the baffle decreases.
