Abstract

Racemic glutamic acid is resolved by inoculating into a super-saturated solution of racemic glutamic acid seed crystals consisting of optically active glutamic acid containing more than 30% of the orthorhombic a -form in each individual seed crystal, the crystals produced by such inoculation being separated from the solution. The seed crystals are preferably fed in at the top of a tower through which a solution of racemic glutamic acid flows upwardly, grown crystals being separated from the solution at the bottom of the tower. The above process may be combined with the process of Specification 865,311.
