Abstract

Articles having hard wear-resistant accurate surfaces, particularly surface-plates for use in gauging, are formed from abrasive particles having a hardness above 9 on Moh's scale bonded with a vi'rified bond and having each particle on the usable surface smoothed so as to render it non-abrasive. The abrasive may be fused alumina, sapphire, ruby, corundum, emery, or silicon, tungsten, tantalum, titanium, boran or other carbide, or boron, titanium, or other nitride. The bond may be a ceramic material such as clay or a mixture of clays, oxides, or silicates, a glassy or porcelain frit, or mixtures thereof. The powdered abrasive and bond are thoroughly mixed, pressed, dried, and fired. The product is then ground preferably with a metal-bonded diamond wheel set so as slightly to dish the article, and is subsequently lapped against a similar product in a series of operations using, preferably, diamond grit of decreasing sizes, and is finally lapped without any grit, using gasoline as a lubricant. The grinding and lapping are preferably effected in a machine wherein the product is rotated and its surface is traversed by a grinding-wheel. Specification 563,652 is referred to.
