Abstract
623,922. Inertia switches. HEMSWORTH, C. K. May 29, 1947, No. 14321. [Class 38(v)] An inertia-operated switch comprises a heavy ball 1 suspended between two springs 2, 3, of which 2 has a fixed anchor 13, the other 3 being connected to one arm 4 of a bellcrank lever pivoted at 17. Normally the centre of the ball is in line with the points 13, 14, but on a rapid deceleration, the ball moves to the left away from a buffer 18 and so moves the arm 5 of the bell-crank lever above a recess 7 on a spring-pressed lever 6 to permit closure of contacts 9, 10. The recess 7 also serves to maintain the parts in the operated condition. In a modification, Fig. 2, (not shown), the spring 3 is connected to a spring arm instead of the bellcrank lever, and this arm may, according to a further modification, carry the movable contact. The centre of the ball may be moved to the left of the points 13, 14, in order to preload springs 2 and 3 and reduce the response to vibration.
