Abstract
623,843. Universal joints. TRIGGS, W. W. (Morgan Construction Co.). May 16, 1947, No. 13264. [Class 80 (ii)] A universal joint comprises a sleeve 11 mounted on one shaft 14 and having in its projecting portion a plurality of deep longitudinal grooves 21 engaged by a series of longitudinal ribs 32 on the end of the other shaft 10, the grooves between the ribs 32 containing bosses 35 engaging the sleeve ribs 32 to centre the shaft 10 in the socket. To allow universal movement the ribs 32 are curved in planes coaxial to the shaft 10 and perpendicular to the axis, and the bosses 35 are formed with part spherical surfaces having a centre on the shaft axis and a diameter equal to that of the accurately finished cylindrical inner surface 23 of the sleeve. The ribs in the sleeve extend into suitable deep grooves 15 in the shaft 14, which may be the neck of a roll, to provide a drive, the sleeve being centered on spigots 25, 19 of different diameters and located axially by a setscrew 29 engaging a groove 27 in the shaft.
