Abstract
623,770. Wave-guides ; duplex radio signalling. COOP, E. Nov. 21, 1946, No. 34518. [Class 40 (v)] A wave-guide in a common transmitting and receiving aerial system comprises means for launching or receiving H waves polarized in one plane, means for receiving or launching E waves and means for transforming H waves polarized in a plane perpendicular to the plane of polarization of the first H waves into E waves. As shown, a wave-guide 1 in a common transmitting and receiving aerial system is fed from a transmitter by a probe 2 arranged to launch horizontally polarized H<11> waves. Vertically polarized H<11> waves received from a distant station are transformed by a semicylindrical block 4 of dielectric material to give an E0 wave which excites the receiving probe 3 mounted in a semicylindrical groove in the block 4. The flat surface of the dielectric block 4 is arranged parallel to the transmitting probe 2 so that the transmitted H<11> waves are not affected by the block 4 and do not excite the probe 3. A tuning piston 5 serves to orientate the block 4 correctly and to maintain proper matching. A similar arrangement, having a vertical transmitting probe, is used at the other station, which transmits vertically polarized H<11> waves, and receives horizontally polarized H" waves, transforming them to E0 waves.
