Abstract

582,176. Duplex wireless signalling ; wave guides. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and LAMONT, H. R. L. March 29, 1943, No. 5071. [Class 40 (v)] In a duplex radio signalling system, the aerial at one or both stations is connected to one end of a wave guide 1 adapted to transmit waves polarized in either of two perpendicular planes A, B ; and the other end of the guide 1 branches into separate guides 2, 3 leading respectively to transmitting and receiving apparatus T, R, the guide 2 being arranged to transmit only waves of one polarization and the guide 3 waves of the other polarization. As shown, the discrimination is effected by diaphragm obstructions 4, 5 with diametral slots 6, 7 mutually perpendicular; but diametral wires or systems of wires may be substituted for the slotted diaphragms. Alternatively, the guide 1 may be of square section, and the guides 2, 3 of rectangular section, the wider sides of one rectangular guide being in planes parallel to the narrower sides of the other. The frequencies used for the two directions of transmission may be different, and the transmitter oscillator at each station used as a local oscillator for a superheterodyne receiver at that station. The aerial may be of the horn type, or the open end of the guide may be associated with a paraboloidal reflector.
