Abstract

An aluminium-base alloy consists of 9-12 per cent magnesium, 0.001-0.05 per cent boron and the balance aluminium, the preferred amount of magnesium being 10 per cent. A molten aluminium-magnesium alloy containing 9-12 per cent magnesium is degasified by introducing boron trichloride at a point adjacent the bottom of the bath and continuing the introduction for such time after degasification as is sufficient to introduce into the alloy the requisite amount of boron, this time being calculable on the approximate basis of two seconds per pound of alloy.
