[Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A plug and socket connector in which the plug has a blade 19, comprises a socket 6 containing a contact assembly lever system 13, 14, 16, 17, forming open jaws 17 at the socket entrance and closed jaws 12, whereby on inserting the blade 19 it passes through the jaws 17 and opens the jaws 12, thereby causing the contact assembly to pivot so that the jaws 17 close on and grip the blade 19. Contacts 2, formed from strip are bent at 11 to form resilient elbows and have flats 12 which merge into parts 13, which have fulcra 14, and jaws 17 which engage co-operating blade contacts 19. The contacts are assembled on a holder 4 in a recess 6 with the elbows and fulcra against the walls 7. The blades 19 have a taper 19a which separates the flats 12 and causes the jaws 17 which swing about the fulcra 14 to approach the blade 19. As the blade is further inserted the flats are further displaced and the jaws 17 close more tightly upon it. In a plug and socket coupling, Fig. 4 (not shown), the contacts are held in position by making the holder 4 wider than the contacts. A single strip formed as above may be used, Fig. 6 (not shown), the recess having a rib for the blade. Alternatives include a contact formed of one strip having reversed jaws to contact each blade outer side, Fig. 5 (not shown), and, Fig. 7, a stamped or cast .lever system 23 on a spring 24. The jaws 17 may be thickly coated with silver 17a which bears on a coated part 19b of the blade, or on conducting buttons secured thereto.
