Abstract

Interpolymers soluble in volatile organic solvents are produced by copolymerizing a mixture of more than 4 parts by weight of vinylidene chloride to 1 part of acrylonitrile in the presence of a <FORM:0622481/IV (a)/1> compound, where R and R1 may be hydrogen or hydrocarbon radicals. Specified aldehydes and ketones are methyl isobutyl ketone, dipropyl ketone, diisopropyl ketone, methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, mesityl oxide, benzaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetophenone and formaldehyde. The interpolymerization may be carried out by emulsion, granular, bulk and solution methods. In examples: vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile are interpolymerized (a) in aqueous emulsion in the presence of ammonium persulphate, sodium meta-bisulphite, with or without either sulphated methyl oleate, a polyoxyalkylene derivative of sorbitan monolaurate or an alkali salt of a sulphated higher alcohol in the presence of methyl isobutyl ketone, mesityl oxide, dipropyl ketone or benzaldehyde; (b) in a reaction mixture consisting of an azeotropic mixture of water and methyl ethyl ketone; and (c) in solution in methyl ethyl ketone. Solutions of the interpolymers in volatile organic solvents are suitable for coating wood, metal, paper, cardboard, chipboard, cloth and leather and may be used to provide a moisture-proof heat-sealable coating on films of organic non-fibrous water-sensitive material, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, glycol cellulose. The solutions may also be cast into films. If desired, plasticizers, stabilizers, pigments, dyes, drying oils or other synthetic or natural resins may be incorporated in the solutions.
