Abstract

Freshly formed sheets, films, foils, pellicles or the like of water-sensitive, film-forming material are passed prior to drying, through an aqueous solution or dispersion containing a melamine-formaldehyde resin. The sheets or films so obtained are free from tackiness, and when a moisture-proof coating is subsequently applied thereto an improved anchorage and improved water resistance is obtained. In the case of, for example, regenerated cellulose film, the solution or dispersion of the resin may be incorporated with the aqueous bath of softening agent, e.g. glycerine, through which the film is passed, and to which may be added organic acids, e.g. formic or acetic acid, or salts of acid reaction, e.g. alum or ammonium chloride to provide optimum conditions for polymerization of the resin.
