Abstract

Unsaturated monomers, singly or in admixture, are photo-polymerized in the presence of an azo compound in which the two valencies of the azo group are attached to aliphatic carbon atoms. The process may be carried out using bulk, emulsion, granular or solution methods. Monomers specified are acrylic, haloacrylic and methacrylic acids, esters, amides and nitriles, such as methyl methacrylate, octyl methacrylate, methoxymethyl methacrylate, chloroethyl methacrylate and corresponding esters of acrylic and a -chloroacrylic acids, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, vinyl chloride or fluoride, vinylidene chloride or fluoride, vinyl acetate, chloracetate, propionate or stearate, N-vinyl phthalimide, styrene, vinyl naphthalene, methyl vinyl ketone, chlorotrifluoroethylene, methyl fumarate, and ethylene. Azo compounds specified are a -a 1-azodiisobutyronitrile, dimethyl a ,a 1-azodiisobutyrate, 1,11-azodi-(cyclohexanecarbonitrile). The process may be used to form sheets or to unite two surfaces.
