Abstract

Synthetic rubber is made by the polymerization of a polymerizable organic compound having at least one vinyl group in the presence of a minor amount of a blend of tertiary aliphatic mercaptans of different carbon content. Preferably, the mercaptans have 8-16 carbon atoms in the molecule, specified are mixtures of tertiary isomeric dodecyl and tetradecyl or hexadecyl and of tertiary isomeric octyl, dodecyl and tetradecyl mercaptans. Suitable polymerizable compounds are olefines, diolefines, e.g. butadiene, styrene and its derivatives and alkyl esters of acrylic and alkacrylic acids. Preferably, the process comprises the polymerization in aqueous emulsion of butadiene in admixture with another polymerizable compound, e.g. styrene, derivatives thereof, acrylo- and methacrylo-nitriles and methyl and ethyl methacrylates. Examples describe the copolymerization in aqueous emulsion of butadiene and styrene in the presence of soap, potassium persulphate and blends of the tertiary aliphatic mercaptans. The resultant latex is preferably treated with phenyl - b - naphthylamine followed by coagulation.
