Abstract

Olefinically unsaturated compounds are polymerized in the presence of a water phase and a soluble salt of a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid as emulsifier the acid containing 8, 9 or 10 carbon atoms in the molecule and the carboxyl group of the acid being bound directly to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom. The carboxylic acid may be obtained by the reaction of mono-olefins with formic acid or with carbon monoxide and water. Specified unsaturated compounds are vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, divinyl benzene, acrylic and methacrylic acids, their nitriles and amides, vinyl carbinols, ethers, ketones and vinyl acetylene as well as butadiene, isoprene, dimethyl-butadiene, chloroprene and their mixtures with styrene or acrylonitrile. The usual initiators, peroxides, and nitrogen compounds, modifiers, e.g. mercaptans and short-stoppers, e.g. di-t-butyl hydroquinone may be present. Specification 888,384 is referred to.
