Abstract
622,013. Dielectric heating. SCOTT, R. R. B., and SEAL, R. A. March 1, 1947, No. 5908. [Class 39(iii)] Irregular shaped substances (e.g. precooked food to be reheated) are heated in an atmosphere of steam. The substance is placed on a grid 2 in a container 1 of low loss material such as glass. The container is placed within an outer container 3 fitted with a lid 4, also of glass, which is then placed between electrodes 8, 9. The inner container 1 is provided with spacing feet 6 which separate it from the bottom of the outer container by a small amount, the space being filled with water. When R.F. energy is supplied by the generator 10 to the electrodes 8, 9, the water is converted into steam in about one minute and the contents of the container are heated to a suitable temperature in about three minutes with a consumption of two kilowatts and a frequency of 20-40 megacycles per second. In an alternative arrangement a separate external steam generator is employed with a conduit conveying the steam to the interior of the container in which the substance is heated.
