621,715. Sharpening - steels. GOODENOUGH, W. Feb. 21, 1947, No. 5138. [Class 60] A sharpening - steel, or an attachment therefor, comprises one or more winged projections 5 having one or more slots 6 or steps, each of which forms a firm seat and guide for receiving the rear edge of a blade while it is drawn across the steel and is so proportioned as to ensure an efficient sharpening angle between the cutting edge and the steel. The projection 5 may be formed on a tube 1, Fig. 3, which is provided with a handle 2 and a wing-nut 4 for securing the steel 3. A lip 8 is used when sharpening scissors. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the tube 1 is secured on the steel 3 and has slots 6 in the opposite edges of the wing 5. Alternatively, a flat plate with a series of slots for the blade may be attached to one face of the tube 1, or two similar flat plates, each with a series of steps thereon, may be secured to opposite faces of the tube. The attachment may also be barrelshaped, Fig. 10, and have supports 8 for resting on a table.
