Abstract

A textile drafting element, such as a roller cover, cot, or high-draft element, comprises a vulcanised, oil-resistant synthetic rubber modified with animal protein, which is present in an amount sufficient to render the element substantially resistant to "lapping." The preferred proteins are highly hydrolised gelatin, glue, casein, or egg albumen and 15 - 75 parts by weight may be added to each 100 parts of synthetic rubber, which may be of the chloroprene type, or the butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer type, or an isoprene-acrylonitrile copolymer. A tendency of the element to "eyebrow" may be reduced by incorporating particles of cork or other organic fillers, such as soft wood or balsa. In one example, a mix was prepared including 100 parts of butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer and 50 parts of highly hydrolised gelatin. The mix was formed into a tube, placed on a mandrel, wrapped with tape and vulcanised at 300 DEG F. for about one hour The tube was then removed from the mandrel, cut to the desired lengths, placed upon spinning rolls and buffed. In another example, a mix including 100 parts of chloroprene, 50 parts of glue and 50 parts of 20 - 30 mesh cork was prepared. In a further example, 50 parts of casein were mixed with 100 parts of isoprene-acrylonitrile copolymer.
