Abstract
621,159. Metal window frames. MOORE, B. H. Oct. 9, 1946, Nos. 30177/46 and 26898/47. [Class 20(iii)] In a metal window sash and frame of the kind formed of mitred and welded strips of combined U- and L- or of Z- section, each strip is of rightangled Z-shape in section, one flange of the Z being turned back to lie parallel with the web forming a U-section groove, which provides a bedding for putty or houses a resilient cushion, the edge of the return member also being adapted to receive a resilient strip gasket, grooved to fit over the edge. In the form of window construction shown in vertical section in the Figure, a fixed window is surmounted by a top hung opening light. The outer frame is fabricated from strips 1 of the combined U- and L-section shown, and preferably of cold-rolled steel, the webs 4 being drilled at intervals for fixing screws. A cross-bar 12 divides the frame into an upper and lower part, the latter being glazed with a fixed pane a puttied into position at 11 and 13. The upper part forms the frame for an opening light, the frame 15 of which is of Z-section strip and is hinged at 25 to the outer frame. The return members 5 of the strips forming the upper frame are provided with an easily renewable H-section resilient strip 21 which is compressed by the frame 15 in its closed position, air being trapped in the groove 24 thus giving an efficient weather and draught seal. In a modified construction, Fig. 12 (not shown), the H-section strip is replaced by a resilient square section strip which fits into the U-shaped recess of the frame strip and is contacted by the inner face of the moving frame when the latter is closed.
