[Class 126] A plate adapted to be positioned in a substantially horizontal manner across the chimney opening of a fireplace having at least one opening, the size of which may be varied by means of a slidable closure member, is provided with lugs or the like carrying means for securing the plate in position across the chimney opening of the fireplace. A cast or sheet metal plate 1 having an opening 2 is fitted across the chimney opening of an open fireplace. A closure member 3 having a handle 4 may be slid in guides 6 to vary the size of the opening 2 in the plate 1. In order that the opening 2 may never be completely closed, stop members 7 may be provided to limit the rearward movement of the closure member 3 which may have openings 8. Thumbscrews 10 passing through lugs on the plate 1 are used to secure the plate 1 in position. In another form, (not shown), a plurality of openings may be provided in the plate, corresponding openings being provided in the closure member which may be adjusted by means of a handle to vary the size of the openings in the plate. Stop means is provided to prevent the complete closure of the openings in the plate.
