Abstract

The stability of tetrafluorethylene, containing small amounts of free oxygen, against spontaneous polymerization is improved by reducing the oxygen content to not more than 40 parts per million, preferably to 20 parts per million. The oxygen content is reduced by subjecting tetrafluorethylene to fractional distillation and discarding the oxygen-rich fraction or by treatment with a compound which reacts with free oxygen. Inorganic compounds which may be used include silver and chromous salts. Organic compounds, which are preferred to be used, include those containing a multiple bonded carbon atom, for example: (1) compounds containing ethylenic linkages such as hexenes, octenes, vinyl cyclohexene, cyclohexene, unsaturated acids like naphthenic, methacrylic, crotonic, undecylenic acids and their esters, amides and salts, allyl alcohol, cinnamyl alcohol, acrolein and dioxene. (2) Compounds containing acetylenic linkages: pentine, propiolic acid, mono and divinyl acetylenes. (3) Compounds containing aldehydic groups: formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, &c. (4) Compounds containing a multiple bonded carbon atom not attached to a hydrogen atom are particularly valuable: methacrylic acids, a -pinene, tetrahydronaphthalene, dipentene and terpineol. In the examples, samples of tetrafluorethylene are subjected to tests, with and without stabilizers, and the results are compared. The stabilizers used are Terpene B, tetrahydronaphthalene, benzaldehyde, octene-1, methylmethacrylate, cobalt naphthenate and a -pinene.
