619,829. Quenching devices. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd., and BRIDLE, J. H. Dec. 31, 1946, No. 38078. [Class 72] A quenching device for use in the heat treatment of metal articles comprises a chamber connected to a supply of quenching liquid, an outlet for the discharge of the liquid and internal baffles extending transversely to the direction of entry of the liquid and arranged to constrain the liquid to follow a sinuous path. As shown for surface hardening a cylindrical workpiece, an annular chamber A formed by two parts B, and C contains concentric cylindrical baffles F and G extending from C and B respectively. Water, led into the chamber from two diametrically opposite pipes J, follows a sinuous path round the baffles to an outlet M which may be adjusted by means of the screw-threaded connection D between B and C. Baffles may be fitted between the quenching device and the heating device, which is preferably of the high-frequency type, and behind the quenching device.
