Abstract
441,329. Hardening metal surfaces. SHORTER, A. E., and PATENT GEAR & METAL HARDENING CO., Ltd., 69, Horseferry Road, Westminster. April 17, 1934, No. 11585. [Class 72] [See also Group XI] An apparatus for hardening metal sur faces comprises an in termediate member disposed between heat ing and cooling devices, the positions of the heating and/or cooling devices being adjusted in relation tc the article under treat ment and the inter mediate member being constructed to accom modate articles of vary ing size and shape. The article c is passed through the opening b of a plate d supported on a plate a, the portion d being in the form of three removable segments, Fig. 2, which may be replaced by other pieces to form larger or smaller openings b. Alternatively, the plate a may be provided at its centre with an iris type of diaphragm. A series of gas burners e radially arranged about the opening bare provided for heating the surface of the article c. The burners are mounted on the ends of telescopic tubes f carried by articulated pipes g which are adjustable about ball-and-socket joints h, the lowermost joint h being secured to the underside of the plate a and connected to a common gas supply. A cooling bath may be located below the plate a or cooling jets in a ring i supported on studs k may be provided, or both cooling devices may be used. The article c may be moved through the opening b at a constant or variable speed or intermittently. The apparatus may be applied to the treatment of articles of irregular shape or to the teeth of gear wheels.
