Abstract

[Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXIV] An air-operated sliding piston 27, actuating a presser-plate 20 of a single- or multi-disc friction-clutch 16, connecting a freely-mounted flywheel 10 to the driving shaft 12 of a forging- machine or press, or for a brake, is sealed by a flexible non-metallic oil-resisting (e.g. vulcanised rubber) diaphragm 32, clamped at its inner and outer peripheries respectively to the piston 27 and its cylinder 25. Leak of air and also of piston lubricating oil to the friction surfaces is thereby avoided. The clutch-disc 16 and presser-plate 20 have axially-sliding toothed connections 15, 21 respectively with a hub 13, keyed to the shaft 12, and with the flywheel 10, which latter carries the cylinder 25 to which compressed-air is supplied, to engage the clutch in opposition to release-springs 38, through a stationary glanded fitting 28 and grooves 27c in a central guide-spigot of the piston.
