Abstract

619,530. Starting. DAVEY, PAXMAN, & CO., Ltd., and HOWE, A. G. July 3, 1946, No. 19928. [Class 7 (v)] In a Diesel engine a hand-operated device which controls the supply of compressed air to the engine cylinders for starting has means for temporarily locking it in "stop" and "running" positions and is arranged when moved to an intermediate "starting" position and during movement to either of the other positions to cause rotary devices to actuate valves which permit or shut-off the passage of compressed air for operating fuel inlet means and for starting the engine. As shown, a control handle 1 operates an eccentric 3 controlling valves 10, 11 and an eccentric 4 controlling a valve 60. The handle can be temporarily locked in stop and running positions by means of a spring-pressed ball which enters recesses 7. When the handle is turned to the start position as shown, valves 10 and 11 are opened. Valve 10 allows high pressure compressed air to pass to a distributer 19 driven by the engine cam-shaft 20 and from which the air is distributed to the engine cylinders. The valve 11 allows low pressure air from a pipe 25 to pass to a pipe 26 and past the necked portion 35 to operate a piston 39 which moves the control rack of the fuelinjection pump or a series of such pumps into an extreme fuel position. Engine oil pressure is supplied to a pipe 32 and when the engine has started the oil pressure moves the valve 35 to the left and cuts-off the supply of air to the piston. When the handle 1 is moved to the running position the supply of air to the cylinders and to the pipe 26 is cut-off and the valve 60 moved into a position in which it supplies oil to a pipe 58 leading to the engine governor which may be of the type described in Specification 619,529, [Group XXIX], referred to. As the handle is partially rotated to the stop position eccentric 4 moves the valve 60 to shut-off the oil pipe 33 from the pipe 58. Instead of using the oil pressure to operate the valve 35 a centrifugal governor may be used. When the oil system is used a device to deal with variation of oil viscosity as the engine becomes warmed may be needed.
