619,126. Screw propellers. EVEREL PROPELLER CORPORATION. Sept. 6, 1944, No. 17015. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1943. [Class 114] A variable-pitch aircraft propeller, especially one automatically so, is provided with means for maintaining a thrust on its ball bearings. The hub shown comprises a barrel 1 containing a transverse propeller shaft-coupling sleeve 3. Blade sleeves 9 are mounted on opposite sides of the sleeve 3, and are pivotally supported on axial sleeves 6 carried by the coupling sleeve through ball bearings which are accessible through the blade sleeves and the inner races of which are subject to the thrust of a compressible member such as a spring or a washer 32 of synthetic rubber. A second ball bearing is provided between a flange 24 on the inner end of the sleeve and a ring 27 retained by a snap ring 25 and containing an oil-sealing gasket; this bearing is thus maintained under pressure by the thrust of the element 32. The blades are held against rotation in the sleeves 9 by collars 16 clamping the slit ends of the sleeves; axial adjustment of the blades is permitted by a compressible packing ring 18; an oil-sealing plate 19 may seal the inner end of the blade. The blades are synchronized by gear sections 42 on the sleeve ends engaging a pinion 43; opposed arcuate gear sections 45 engage stops 48 to limit rotary movement of the sleeve. Balancing collars 51 at the ends of the hub carry weighted blocks 53; the propeller may be balanced about the shaft by cutting material from one of these blocks, and balanced about the hub by rotating the collars; afterwards bolting them up and in some cases securing them by screws.
