619,013. Linear-dimension gauges. MERCER, Ltd., T., and WATSON, R. R. Nov. 19, 1946, No. 34294. [Class 106 (ii)] For translating rectilinear motion of one member into proportional angular motion of another about a fixed axis, the two members are operatively connected by means of a lever pivoted to the angularly movable member on a pivot parallel to the axis of that member, one end of the lever sliding against a fixed abutment and the other end against an abutment on the rectilinearly movable member. As applied to a dial gauge, the plunger 10 has a twoarmed lever pivotally mounted on it at 27, the lower arm 28 being adjustably fastened to the plunger while the upper arm 26 has a knife edge 22 bearing on a plane surface 35 on an arm 33 of a lever 23 pivoted at 32 on a toothed quadrant 24 which is pivotally mounted at 25. A knife edge 36 on the other arm of the lever 23 abuts a plane surface 37 on a block 38 which is rotatable for adjustment purposes, and the quadrant is urged anticlockwise by a spring (not shown) so that as the plunger rises the quadrant will turn, the knife edges 22 and 36 sliding along their respective abutment surfaces 35, 37. The teeth on the quadrant engage a pinion 25a on the arbor of which is a pinion 17 in mesh with a pinion 16, so that movement of the plunger rotates the pinion 16, the shaft of which carries a pointer. The pinion 16 also meshes with a wheel 19 coaxial and fast with a pinion 20 meshing with a wheel 21, thus forming a backlash train.
