Abstract
618,813. Thermal switches. NEONELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and MORGAN, R. J. B. Nov. 8, 1946, No. 33278. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XL (a)] The envelope of a glow switch for starting fluorescent lamps is coated with a getter to absorb the occluded gases given off by the bi-metal, and the envelope or switch parts are coated with a radio-active substance, such as thorium silicate, to ensure operation of the switch if kept away from the light. The getter comprises 20 gms of amorphous phosphorus and 90 gms. of cryolite (Na3AIF6) mixed in a ball mill with 2000 c.c.s. of methyl alcohol. The envelope is filled with this solution and then emptied, leaving the coating. The' radio-active coating is about one molecule thick and is either applied separately or 20 gms. of thorium silicate is incorporated in the getter mixture.
