Abstract
618,741. Magnetic separators. RAPID MAGNETTING MACHINE CO., Ltd., and THOMPSON, M. D. Nov. 28, 1946, No. 35268. [Class 72] In a magnetic seperator of the " overband type a number of magnetic poleshoes lying transversely of and at right angles to the length of separator belt and alternating of opposite polarity are mounted over the lower rim of the belt beyond the usual longitudinal pole-shoes. These transverse pole-shoes may each be of uniform polarity throughout its length, or may have opposite poles at their ends the polarity being reversed in successive shoes and the ends of the first transverse shoe being of opposite polarity to the adjacent ends of the main longitudinal poleshoes (see Fig. 3). The magnets may be permanent or electro-magnets, and in the later case a switch controlled by the rotation of the pulleys of the separator belt which is driven through a tongue-limiting clutch may be arranged to interrupt the current to the magnets automatically if the belt is jammed by the attraction to it of heavy material. In the arrangement shown, a magnet h with longitudinal pole-shoes j attracts magnetic material from a conveyor a to the belt b driven in the direction shown by motor g and pulley c. The magnetic material is carried along by the belt and when in the region of the transverse poleshoes n, n, p, p is turned round and over and later leaves the belt. One arrangement of the polarity of the longitudinal poleshoe j and transverse pole-shoes n, p is shown in Fig. 3, and the belt may be fitted with feelers k of magnetic material.
