Abstract

Magnetic devices for securing or increasing ad. hesion.-A self-propelled truck or conveyer running on a wire rope is provided with magnetic means for increasing the adhesion between the truck wheels and the rope, said means being automatically regulated in proportion to the steepness of the gradient. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the truck A is provided with wheels F running on the rope G and driven by an electric motor H through toothed and chain gearing. The wheels F are magnetized for in. creasing their adhesion by means of electromagnets having coils C and pole-pieces E. The adhesion may be varied automatically according to the gradient in one of two ways, viz.-(1) com. pound-wound magnet coils are used in series with the windings of a series motor. Thus, on an incline as more current passes through the motor, and therefore through the magnet coils, the magnetic grip will be increased; (2) the load carrier is hung from a lug D so as to hang vertically, and by its angular movement relatively to the truck on an incline operates a magnet controlling switch having a central "off" position and two "on" positions, so that on the level the magnets are switched off, and are only brought into use on a gradient. In a modification, an endless chain or track is provided between a pair of wheels F and the rope, one of the wheels being magnetized as before.
