Abstract

618,689. Casting-machines. ARNOLD, C. (Lester Engineering Co.). Sept. 16, 1946, No.. 27769. [Class 83 (i)] After making a piston or other article by forcing magnesium, aluminium, zinc or other fluid or plastic material from a pressurechamber through a gate and into a mould, an additional amount of the material is forced into the mould during the cooling of the said article by contracting the length of, or applying pressure to metal in, the gate. A charge of fluid or plastic material is placed in a chamber 11 and forced by a plunger 10 into the cavity 24 of a water-cooled mould 3 with a cooled core 25. When the mould is full the material begins to solidify and the pressure therein rises and becomes sufficient to force back a plunger 33 against the resistance to the discharge of fluid in the cylinder 36 through an adjustable relief valve FC. This causes a shortening of the gate part 34 to supply material to the mould to make up for shrinkage. A suitable alloy is one containing 90 per cent of magnesium, 9 of aluminium, and 1 of zinc, which, when cast by the improved process, has a greater density and tensile strength than when cast by the ordinary die-casting process. The part of the gate subject to the greatest wear is formed as a replaceable insert 32.
