Abstract
An aqueous emulsion of or containing an extract obtained in the refining of petroleum and known as as petroleum aromatic extract which is liquid at ordinary temperatures, has a pour point between 45 DEG and 75 DEG F., and a viscosity at 140 DEG F. of 600-1250 seconds, is applied to the surface of laid concrete to prevent loss or gain of water during hardening. The emulsion is preferably applied by spraying not later than the initial setting of the concrete. The extract may have incorporated in it before emulsification a mineral oil, a wax, e.g., paraffin wax, and/or a resin, preferably a liquid resin such as tall oil. Emulsification may be effected by mechanical or chemical means, and at raised temperature if any of the ingredients are normally solid, and an emulsifying agent or a protective colloid, e.g., casein, may be included. The emulsion may be diluted with water before application. Specification 618,639 is referred to.
