insane FTENT FFEQE FRANK L. PULLEN, OF OLDTOWN, MAINE.
IAPER WAXING AND SIZING COMPOSITION.
No Drawing.
7 '0 all whomit may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK L. PULLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oldtown, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Paper VVaxing and Sizing Composition; and I do hereby declare the fOllOWiIlg to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such 10 as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide an eflicient paper sizing and'water proofing composition applicable to the paper either by placing it in the heaters, in the course of manufacture of the paper, or by dipping the paper thereinto or otherwise saturating the completed product.
In carrying out the invention there is employed a composition of matter consisting of lime water, borax (used optionally), wax
(bees wax), and oil (vegetable oil such as linseed), together with paraffin or a mineral oil, all of which can be combined in substantially the following proportions and manner:
The oil should be heated to a temperature sufficient to melt the bees wax (it being understood that any equivalent of bees wax may be used in this connection) and the wax should be separately melted and united with the hot oil in the proportion of one to three pounds of the wax to one gallon of the oil. To this mixture of oil and Wax there should be added limewater in the proportion of gallon to gallon or equal parts, the limewater being prepared by subjecting forty-five pounds of lime to twenty-five Application filed September 21, 1922. Serial'No. 589,700.
gallons of Water to which if desired may be 40 added from one to three pounds of borax, although as above indicated the borax may be omitted. The purpose of the same is to soften the limewater. Moreover the proportion from one to three pounds of wax to the gallon of oil is variable according to whether the heavy or light composition is desired.
It has been found in practice that parafiin and a mineral oil may be substituted for the beeswax and vegetable oil although the former are preferred.
The wax and oil may be united with the lime and borax water either hot or cold, the oil and wax having previously been united while hot as previously indicated. The oil and wax composition while being added to the lime-borax water should be thoroughly and continuously stirred and when the mix-- ture has been completed it may be introduced into the paper making heaters or may be used asa bath into which the aper is dipped or through which the paper 1s run to the end that a complete saturation may be effected.
The resulting product is both a water proof and air proof paper.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A liquid sizing for paper consisting of lime Water, borax, wax and oil in substantially the proportions specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' FRANK L. PULLEN.
