Abstract
Soil is treated so that the optimum content of water and therefore, the strength of roads, embankments &c. is maintained by applying thereto an aqueous emulsion of or containing a petroleum aromatic extract, preferably one which is liquid at normal temperatures, has a pour point of 45-47 DEG F and a viscosity, measured on Redwood's viscometer at 140 DEG F. of 650-1250 seconds. One or more substances having water-repellent properties, e.g., a mineral oil, wax, resin, or bitumen, an emulsifying agent, or a protective colloid such as casein may be added to the extract before emulsification. Emulsification is preferably effected at a temperature at which all the ingedients are in a liquid or dissolved state. The amount of emulsion used is up to 20 per cent of the weight of the soil, the extract content being from 2 to 10 per cent of the weight of the soil. The water content of the soil is preferably adjusted before addition of the emulsion, this being effected by spraying or mixing in a mechanical mixer. Specification 618,640 is referred to.
