[Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXV] The ratio of the negative and positive halfcycles of an A.C. arc welding current is varied to improve the weld by a unidirectional voltage included in the circuit (see Group XXXV), and uniform surface heating and elimination of intermittent rectification between the electrode and the work when welding aluminium may be obtained by coating the work with an electron emissive material such as thorium or barium carbonate which permits the use of higher welding currents without exceeding the critical temperature. The invention is applicable to gas shielded welding with a refractory electrode and to submerged melt welding with a carbon or metallic electrode.
