[Class 87 (ii)] A bridge 11 pivoted at 12 supports from its head 9 a last 54. The mould consists of two side jaws 3 and a heated base 41. The jaws 3 slide horizontally within guides 4, 41, which are secured to the bridge 11, and the base 41 slides vertically within the guides 4, 41. When the bridge 11 rocks to the left, Fig. 1, the jaws 3 are urged together by means of pivoted struts 5, Fig. 3, disposed between the jaws 3 and the machine frame. The base 41 then rises to complete the moulding. When vulcanisation is complete, the bridge 11 rocks to the right, Fig. 1, the jaws 3 open and the base 41 then descends. This sequence of operations is performed automatically by means of an axially displaceable screw-threaded shaft 14 pivotally connected to the bridge 11, the shaft 14 engaging in an internally screw-threaded gear member 16 driven by a reversible motor 19. On starting the motor 19 the shaft 14 is axially displaced to the left, Fig. 1, thus rocking the bridge 11, until clutch members 64, 66, engage, when the shaft begins to rotate without axial displacement. This rotation is transmitted to a gear-box 31 via shafts 24, 26, 28, thus operating a hydraulic cylinder 33 which in turn causes a piston 39 in the ram chamber 35 to rise together with the base 41. A timing device (not shown) keeps the base 41 stationary for a period, after which the motor 19 is automatically started in the reverse direction when this sequence of operations is reversed. The machine is adapted to mould two soles simultaneously, the line A-A<1> in Figs. 2, 3, denoting the vertical plane of symmetry of the machine.
