Abstract

Metal oxides in friable form are produced by heating metal compounds in a furnace solely by means of radiant heat so that the heat reaches the material as far as possible only through the upper surface. The process is applicable to the decomposition of rare earth metal nitrates, and is particularly described as applied to the production of luminescent strontium and barium oxides. Strontium hydroxide monohydrate, say, to which is added an activator such as lead or bismuth, in an alumina crucible, is placed in a furnace electrically heated from the top and already in excess of 700 DEG C. The foam formed is finally heated at, say, 1300-1400 DEG C., for a period permitting growth of the oxide crystals, and after cooling, removed with a quartz rod.
