Abstract
616,832. Perforating by fusion. SYNCROCUT SERVICE CO. June 1, 1946, No. 16691. Convention date, June 20, 1944. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group II] Apparatus for making holes in metal by rapid, successive heating and cooling, comprises a main electrical A.C. or pulsating D.C. circuit in series with a coolant carrying electrode 19 and a compensating coil 18, with a solenoid 9 fed with half-wave rectified A.C. reciprocating the electrode 19 in synchronism with the main current, striking the disintegrating heating arc during positive half-cycles only. The rectifier and main transformers are shunt fed, the main circuit voltage is adjustable, and the electrode stroke length is rheostat-controlled. The compensating coil 18 assists the solenoid 9 to draw the spring-urged electrode 19 off the work in the positive half-cycle, and aids the spring 25 in thrusting the electrode 19 against the work during the other half-cycle when the solenoid 9 is de-energized. The compensator 18 carries the main current and cooling fluid to the electrode 19 coupled to the solenoid armature 23.
