Abstract
566,204. Automatic control systems for welding arcs. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. April 29, 1943, No. 6748. Convention date, May 14, 1942. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A motor M advancing a fusible electrode E to work W to be welded is controlled by a pair of thermionic valves of which one, 72, is responsive to an electrical characteristic of the welding circuit and the other, 74, is responsive to the conductivity of the first valve. A tapping 122 on a potentiometer 118 connected between electrode and work, with or without a rectifier, in circuit according to the position of a switch 109, determines the potential on the grid of valve 72 rectifying one half-wave of A.C. from a transformer 30 and controlling the current supplied to the armature of the motor M. The output circuit of this valve includes the primary winding of a current transformer 132; the secondary winding is shunted by a condenser 138 which determines the potential on the grid of the valve 74, rectifying the other half-wave of A.C. supplied to the motor armature. The field winding F of the motor is constantly excited from a separate rectifier 50.
